How to Install a Paver Patio That Doesn't Sink (BC Guide)

Walk any BC neighbourhood and you'll find them: paver patios with a dip in the middle, wavy edges, weeds pushing through open joints. None of those patios failed on top. They failed underground — thin base, no compaction, or nowhere for water to go.
Here's the full installation process the way crews actually do it, with the numbers most DIY tutorials round down.
Plan First: Depth, Slope, and Water
Total excavation is deeper than most people expect: 4–6" of compacted base + 1" of bedding sand + the paver itself — call it 7–9" below finished height for a patio. (Driveways need roughly double the base and are a different animal — more on that below.)
Slope the whole build away from the house — about 1–2% (¼" per foot is the classic rule). Flat patios pond; patios sloped toward the house do something worse.

Many Lower Mainland cities also have permeable-surface minimums for your lot — if you're paving a large area, permeable pavers may not just be a nice option; they may be how you stay compliant.

Plate compactor — non-negotiable, and you'll want it on at least two separate days
Masonry saw or angle grinder with diamond blade for border cuts

Shovels, hard rake, wheelbarrow (plan on moving several tonnes)

Two lengths of 1" pipe or screed rails + a straight screed board

Step 1 — Excavate to Solid Ground
Dig the full footprint to firm ground — string lines keep the edges and depth honest.
Strip sod and dig to your full depth across the whole footprint plus 6" beyond the finished edge on every open side (your edge restraint needs base under it too, or the border sags first). If the bottom of the dig is soft, wet, or previously disturbed fill, keep going until you hit firm ground and make up the difference with extra base. Compact the subgrade — two passes minimum. On clay, lay geotextile fabric over the subgrade so your base can't slowly disappear into the mud below.
Step 2 — Build the Base in Compacted Lifts
¾" minus road base goes in thin lifts, each one compacted before the next.
¾" minus angular road base only. The angular faces lock together under compaction; round gravel never does.
Place it in lifts of 2–4", compacting every lift with the plate compactor — two passes minimum, overlapping paths. A compactor only densifies the top few inches of loose material; dumping 6" and compacting once leaves the bottom half loose, and loose base will settle into that dip you see in every DIY patio.
Build your 1–2% slope into the base itself, and check it with a string line as you go.
Done right, this step takes longer than laying the pavers. That ratio is normal — it's what "built to last" physically looks like.
Step 3 — Set the Edge Restraint First
Restraint goes in before the pavers — it's the straight edge the whole field works off.
Set the edge restraint on the compacted base before any pavers go down — it becomes the straight, fixed edge the whole field works off. Spike it into the compacted base on your final lines, and lay the restraint's base flange toward the field so the pavers overlap it by at least an inch. When you lay up to it, the brick sits tight against the restraint — no polymeric sand joint between brick and edging.
This is also the most commonly skipped component in DIY builds. Interlocking pavers work by pushing against each other — without a restrained perimeter they migrate outward, joints open, and the field unravels from the edges in. Skipped restraint is the most common reason we get called to reset a patio a few years later.
Step 4 — Screed the Bedding Sand (Thin!)
Rails and a straight board leave a uniform 1" bedding layer — don't walk on it after.
Set two rails on the compacted base, spread concrete sand, and pull a straight board across the rails to leave a uniform 1" layer. Lift the rails, fill the grooves, and don't walk on it. Two rules: bedding sand is for setting pavers, never for fixing low spots in the base — and more sand is not better. Thick sand layers shift, and the patio shifts with them.
Step 5 — Lay the Pavers
Work outward from your straight edge on string lines — place straight down, never slide.
Start from a fixed straight edge — the house or the edge restraint you set in Step 3 — and work outward on string lines, laying the border bricks tight to the restraint.
Place each paver straight down and "click" it against its neighbour — never slide it across the sand. Sliding plows sand between joints and puts the surface out of level.
Pull from several pallets at once to blend colour variation across the patio.
Work from on top of the laid pavers, not from the sand.
Save the cuts for the border, all at the end.
Step 6 — Compact the Surface and Lock the Joints
Sweep polymeric sand to fill the joints, compact, top up — then blow every grain of dust off before watering.
Run the plate compactor over the finished surface with a protective pad, in overlapping passes — this seats the pavers into the bedding sand and vibrates sand up into the lower joints.

Mist per the bag's instructions — light, repeated watering, never flooding — and keep traffic off until cured.
Polymeric sand gets blamed for a lot of failures it didn't cause: joints that crack and wash out in year one are almost always a symptom of base movement underneath, not bad sand.
A Word on Driveways
Everything above scales up hard for vehicles: roughly double the base depth, tighter material specs, herringbone laying patterns for load, and drainage design that handles a car-size runoff surface. A patio is a realistic DIY project for a patient homeowner. A paver driveway rarely is — and redoing a failed one costs more than building it right once.
