Hardscaping Contractor in Victoria
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and the warmest major city in Canada -- a place where outdoor living spaces get genuine year-round use. From the heritage streetscapes of Fairfield and Rockland to the waterfront properties along Dallas Road, the hardscaping market here is shaped by two forces: a deep respect for architectural heritage and a climate that makes every patio, walkway, and garden wall a daily-use investment, not a seasonal afterthought.
The terrain across Greater Victoria is generally gentle compared to the North Shore or Sea-to-Sky, but Garry oak meadows, rocky outcrops, and bedrock close to the surface create their own engineering challenges. James Bay and Esquimalt are relatively flat; Oak Bay slopes gently toward the waterfront; Saanich ranges from urban density near UVic to semi-rural acreage in the north. Each area demands a different approach to base preparation, drainage, and material selection.
Victoria's regulatory environment is among the most complex in our coverage area. Heritage Conservation Areas can require a Heritage Alteration Permit for any exterior work -- including new retaining walls, fences, driveways, and patios. The tree protection bylaw is one of BC's strictest, covering all trees with 30cm+ trunk diameter and protecting special species at just 50cm in height. Wood burning is completely banned -- indoors and outdoors. And the stormwater utility charges based on impervious area, creating a direct financial incentive for permeable hardscaping solutions.

Local Regulations You Should Know
Heritage Conservation Areas -- Permit May Be Required
Properties in Heritage Conservation Areas or on the Heritage Register may require a Heritage Alteration Permit for any exterior work, including new retaining walls, fences, driveways, and patios. A conservation plan by a qualified heritage consultant may be required. Regular maintenance that does not change materials, design, or appearance is exempt.

Tree Protection -- One of BC's Strictest
All trees with 30cm+ trunk diameter are protected regardless of species. Garry oak, Arbutus, Pacific yew, and Pacific dogwood are protected at just 50cm in height. Hedges with stems 30cm+ DBH can be protected. Cash-in-lieu is $2,000 per tree. Security deposits range from $350/tree (non-development) to $1,000-$2,000/tree (development, depending on species).

Fence Heights -- 1.22m Front, 1.83m Side/Rear
Front yard fences from the parcel boundary to the front building line are limited to 1.22m (4 feet). Side and rear yard fences from the front building line to the rear boundary are limited to 1.83m (6 feet). Fences exceeding these limits require a Council variance. Heritage areas may require a Heritage Alteration Permit.

Fire Features -- Complete Wood-Burning Ban
Wood burning is completely banned in Victoria -- both indoors and outdoors, on public and private property. Gas and propane are permitted for cooking only; decorative fire rings are not allowed. Portable grills must be 2m or more from any structure. Penalties range from $350 to $2,000.

Stormwater Charges -- Permeable Paving Incentive
Victoria's stormwater utility charges are based on impervious surface area. The Rainwater Rewards program offers 2.5% to 50% off your stormwater bill for approved on-site rainwater management, including permeable paving. This creates a direct financial incentive for permeable driveways, walkways, and patios.
